Thanks, as always, to our amazing sponsors – they’re local businesses, families and individuals who demonstrate unwavering generosity and faith in our ākonga (learners).
Becoming Te Pūkenga
From the first day of September (Mahuru) in 2022, Whitireia and WelTec joined together to become part of Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology.
Te Pūkenga brings together the existing Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) and Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) as one organisation. The aim is to develop capabilities that underpin work-based, campus-based, and online learning, as a successful, unified system. A comprehensive network of studying opportunities for ākonga and increased collaboration between programmes are key objectives. Career focused learning, reflecting and meeting the needs of learners, businesses and communities, and evolving to meet new and rapidly changing demands like Covid-19, are three capability-building workstreams that the new entity is entrusted to deliver. Read more in our September Newsletter.
Since 2012, Whitireia and Weltec have been allied in a strategic partnership, with both now part of Te Pūkenga, alongside all other institutes of technologies and polytechnics in Aotearoa New Zealand.

One crisp dawn in 1985, in a groundbreaking ceremony, the role was given to Whitireia (or Parumoana as it was for a brief time) to provide Porirua and its surrounding communities with life changing tertiary education opportunities, where prior to this historic moment, there were none.
Whitireia is a name our people brought from Hawaiiki with them. They believe it came from ngā atua, from the gods. That name is very deep in the Māori world. There are two names in Māoridom that we say are from the gods, and Whitireia is one of them – Ihakara Arthur, Ngāti Toa kaumātua
WelTec began life as the Petone Technical School in 1904, teaching classes in the evenings from rented accommodation, and as such, is one of the oldest tertiary education entities in New Zealand. Until 2001, when it became the Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec), it was known under various titles, including, Petone Technical College, Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College, Petone Technical Institute and Hutt Valley Polytechnic. WelTec came into being with the combining of the Central Institute of Technology (CIT) – based in Heretaunga, and once part of the original institute in Petone – with Hutt Valley Polytechnic.

March is the month we introduce our Whitireia scholarship recipients to their incredible sponsors in a moving ceremony, also attended by proud whānau. This year has been all the more special, given the Alert Level events of 2020 meant we had no opportunity to gather to celebrate our recipients in the previous year.
2020 was a challenging year for students everywhere. With the various Covid Alert Levels, and much study moved online, it is significant that many of our 2020 recipients have again been awarded a scholarship in 2021 – those students met their challenges and they excelled. We salute their enthusiasm and their commitment. To all our recipients for 2021 – gaining a scholarship is no small achievement – we’re proud of you!

We’ll add some more pics from our 2021 ceremony as soon as we can. In the meantime, here are a few from earlier years.
Another awesome group of students were awarded their Whitireia Foundation scholarships for 2020. In other years, our scholarship recipients would be surrounded by proud whānau at a very special Awards ceremony, where they would meet their sponsors.
2020 was different. Awards night was set to take place the week New Zealand went into Alert Level 4 lockdown. It is a tribute to our recipients for 2020 that they stayed the course through some seriously challenging times. New priorities and challenges once New Zealand moved to stem the community spread of Covid-19, has meant a couple of students pick up their scholarships in 2021 or will defer study until later. To all of our recipients, winning a scholarship is a significant achievement – we’re proud of you!

A record number of students were awarded Whitireia Foundation scholarships for study in 2017. For this, we are grateful to our amazing sponsors, a good number who have been supporting Whitireia students for a decade or more. Take a look at our sponsors here. The families, trusts and businesses that are our sponsors, have all made a meaningful commitment to their community by supporting a student. A number of sponsors also provide mentoring and work placement opportunities.
Our students tell us they see this investment in them and their future as hugely significant. We know from their feedback that a scholarship is worth so much more than the money. Students respond to the faith shown in them by their sponsors and they commit themselves to doing their absolute best. We hear from our sponsors that they are motivated by seeing their student reach their potential, and they will support them in many ways to do that – from commissioning artworks, as in the case of one of our carving students, to regularly opening their business up to students to experience the workplace for themselves. We look forward to tracking the future achievements of students participating in mentorship and work experience, and to grow this part of our scholarship programme, based on the evidence we gather.
The Foundation extends grateful thanks to all our sponsors and to the students who have joined the Whitireia Foundation family, through being awarded scholarships this year. See photos from the Ceremony on Whitireia’s Facebook page here.
Reaching 50 scholarships for 2017 is a milestone for us. We also had a record number of applicants. We would love to be able to recognise more students, so fewer miss out. Our scholarships have grown from $70,000 awarded in 2011 to $120,000 in 2017. Our Trustees are committed to fostering enduring partnerships with our sponsors that will result in the continued growth of the scholarship fund, and most of all, in the attainment of student – and community – success.
If you are thinking about making a difference by sponsoring a student, please get in touch. You can use the comments section below to make an inquiry – your details will be kept confidential.

At a lively and uplifting ceremony last week, more than $100,000 of scholarship awards were presented to 46 hard-working Whitireia students. Whitireia Foundation Chair, Tim Sheppard, did a fine job as master of ceremonies, speaking from the heart, as always.
The ceremony and after-match supper saw our students supported by a crowd of enthusiastic whanau, friends, and of course, their all-important sponsors. Guest speaker this year was the engaging Maria Uluilelata, Whitireia’s career consultant, who spoke about her learning journey.
This year, we were excited to present a high-spec laptop computer to one of our most hard-working journalism students. Other awards ranged from book grants, to tuition scholarships up to $3500-00 in value. As trustees, we have been moved by many of the letters of appreciation received in the past week from our student recipients – we share some of these with you on our students’ stories page.
Here are a few pictures from this year’s outstanding group of scholarship recipients. Congratulations to you all, and huge thanks to our sponsors – your contribution makes such a difference to many lives. To friends and whanau of our recipients, thank you for celebrating this year’s student scholarship awards with us – your participation means a great deal. Thanks also to our Whitireia support staff, with extra-special thanks to Donna Creary, organiser-extraordinaire. This event was attended by two new Trustees – welcome Izzy Ford and John Granville. We were also privileged to have with us two members of the Weltec/Whitireia Council. All of you helped make this event truly heart-warming.

2012 Whitireia Foundation scholarship recipient Natalie Smith has scooped not one – but two awards in 2013. The Bachelor of Applied Arts (Visual Arts & Design) student was presented with the Mana Zonta Design award, worth $3000, at a ceremony held last week.
This is only the second year of the award, which is given to a female student from Whitireia Visual Arts and Design, on completion of their degree. The award recognises Natalie for her outstanding drive and motivation for design, academic standards and her contribution to design research, aimed at commercialisation.
Deb Donnelly is co-Programme Leader, Visual Arts and Design at Whitireia. She explains, “This award is about women empowering women to succeed. A helping hand at the beginning of a fledging design career can make all the difference and possibly save years of struggle.”
Capping off her success with Mana Zonta, Natalie is exhibiting at TOAST, Whitireia’s graduate Visual Arts and Design exhibition that runs at Pataka Arts + Museum until December 15. At the TOAST opening, Natalie was announced as the Toi Pōneke and Whitireia Artist in Residence, a one year Wellington residency.
The residency provides paid studio space in the creative hub of Toi Pōneke for a third year degree graduate, who intends to extend their study for a further year.
You can see Natalie’s and other graduate work being exhibited at the TOAST exhibition. It’s on at Pataka, cnr Parumoana and Norrie Streets, Porirua from 22 November – 15 December, Monday – Saturday 10am – 4.30pm and Sunday 11am – 4.30pm.
More than 200 people attended the 2013 Whitireia Foundation Scholarship Awards on March 26, celebrating the success of 50 deserving scholarship recipients. Proud friends and family were in attendance to celebrate the students’ fine achievement, alongside valued sponsors, Porirua’s Mayor, Nick Leggett, members of the Whitireia Council, Whitireia’s CEO Don Campbell, along with other Whitireia staff, and Foundation Trustees. Chair of the Foundation, Tim Sheppard, presided over the ceremony, where our sponsors personally presented the awards to each student. Speaking for the students, Anaru Rima, a Bachelor of Nursing (Māori) student and Ngāti Toa scholarship recipient, impressed on guests and sponsors, just what it meant to receive such support:
The generosity of the sponsors and their support allows us to progress and move forward within our different areas of study. We will repay you through being committed, focused and dedicated to our studies at Whitireia – Anaru Rima
Whitireia’s brand new Wikitoria Katene building (at the Porirua campus) was a fitting location for the ceremony, reflecting the significant milestones achieved by both Whitireia Community Polytechnic and the Foundation, in the past year. Last week saw Whitireia celebrating the opening of its impressive new building, and upgraded facilities for Health Science students. In another milestone, the Foundation’s Trustees had last year set the ambitious target of $100,000 to be awarded in scholarships for 2013, up from 70,000 in 2012. In fact, the Whitireia Foundation was proud to award more than $103,000 in scholarships this year. The scholarships support students’ studies in a range of areas, including: Nursing, Social Work, Teaching, Information Technology, Applied Business Studies, Professional Cookery, Performing Arts, Electrical and Automotive Engineering and Carpentry.
The Foundation and students gratefully acknowledge our 15 valued sponsors for providing grants ranging from $500 to $3000. Most are for tuition, with two providing grants for books.
The awarding of scholarships was followed by a ‘mix and mingle’ supper, where sponsors and students could get to know each other, along with trustees, Whitireia staff, Council members and invited guests.
Thanks must go to scholarship administrator Donna Creary and other Whitireia staff who worked hard to deliver what appeared to be a seamless presentation ceremony – a stand-out evening for all who attended.
Congratulations to all our 2013 Whitireia Foundation Scholarship recipients. We look forward to hearing about your year!

Whitireia is pleased and proud to support the valuable work of the Foundation. Phone 0800 944 847 for more information on scholarships or emailinfo@whitireia.ac.nz
The Whitireia Foundation is a registered charitable trust, established in 1999 and responsible for managing and growing its scholarship fund, which today sits at close to $400, 000. Our aim is to expand educational opportunities for Whitireia students, to promote knowledge, interest and support for their educational activities. The foundation is pleased to offer a number of scholarships to students who are planning to study at Whitireia. These scholarships provide financial assistance towards tuition fees, unless otherwise specified.
Only the interest on the endowment fund is used for Foundation scholarships, preserving the capital fund. Scholarships are also provided by individuals, organisations and businesses. In 2011-2012, $70,000 was granted to forty-one students, who performed with exceptional results. 2013 saw $100,000 awarded to 50 students, with a similar amount going to students in 2014.
Recipients meet with their scholarship provider on a number of occasions throughout their time of study. Encouraged by the faith shown in them as recipients of a hard-won scholarship, and by the supportive learning environment Whitireia offers, near 100 per cent of our scholarship recipients complete their programme of study with success. Encouragement is seen by many of our students to have as much value as the monetary benefit they receive via their scholarship. The Foundation congratulates all of our scholarship recipients on their achievements.
Letters from our scholarship recipients tell of their experiences and demonstrate how the Whitireia Foundation is making a difference. There is so much satisfaction in seeing someone who receives a scholarship flourishing in their chosen career.
Scholarship application forms are available from the Information & Enrolment Centre (IEC) at the Whitireia Porirua campus. Applications for 2014 closed in October 2013.
Who are our Trustees?
Our Trustees are volunteers who live in the Porirua area and are passionate about expanding educational opportunities for all, whatever people’s personal circumstances. The Trustees are responsible for developing relationships with businesses and individuals who grant scholarships. Some have provided scholarships themselves. The Trustees efforts on behalf of the Foundation include growing awareness of the fund, ensuring the widest variety of people know of the opportunities available to them. The Trustees particular focus in 2012 and 2013 is to grow the fund, to benefit more students, and to provide a buffer for when interest rates are low and the return on the capital does not meet desirable levels. If you are in a position to fund a scholarship, the Foundation would very much appreciate hearing from you. You are welcome to contact one of our Trustees in confidence (click here to go to Trustee page) or email Whitireia at the address below.
