Scholarships 2021 – Congratulations to our amazing students!

Class of 2021 – Congratulations!

March is the month we introduce our Whitireia scholarship recipients to their incredible sponsors in a moving ceremony, also attended by proud whānau. This year has been all the more special, given the Alert Level events of 2020 meant we had no opportunity to gather to celebrate our recipients in the previous year.

2020 was a challenging year for students everywhere. With the various Covid Alert Levels, and much study moved online, it is significant that many of our 2020 recipients have again been awarded a scholarship in 2021 – those students met their challenges and they excelled. We salute their enthusiasm and their commitment. To all our recipients for 2021 – gaining a scholarship is no small achievement – we’re proud of you!

Scholarships 2020 – Congratulations to our awesome students and big thanks to our sponsors!

Another awesome group of students were awarded their Whitireia Foundation scholarships for 2020. In other years, our scholarship recipients would be surrounded by proud whānau at a very special Awards ceremony, where they would meet their sponsors.

2020 was different. Awards night was set to take place the week New Zealand went into Alert Level 4 lockdown.  It is a tribute to our recipients for 2020 that they stayed the course through some seriously challenging times. New priorities and challenges once New Zealand moved to stem the community spread of Covid-19, has meant a couple of students pick up their scholarships in 2021 or will defer study until later. To all of our recipients, winning a scholarship is a significant achievement – we’re proud of you!

Scholarships 2018 – Congratulations to you all and big thanks to our sponsors!

Earlier this month, this awesome bunch of students were awarded their Whitireia Foundation scholarships for 2018, surrounded by proud friends and whānau. Thanks to all who attended the Awards night, and special thanks to our wonderful sponsors.

Special thanks also to Virtuoso Strings who delighted us all with their beautiful sounds.  The junior and senior orchestras of Virtuoso Strings are made up of more than 160 students from Porirua’s decile 1 and 2 schools.

Who are our recipients in 2018? See here.

Below are just a few pics of our 2018 Scholarship Awards Ceremony.

Scholarship Awards Ceremony 2013

More than 200 people attended the 2013 Whitireia Foundation Scholarship Awards on March 26, celebrating the success of 50 deserving scholarship recipients. Proud friends and family were in attendance to celebrate the students’ fine achievement, alongside valued sponsors, Porirua’s Mayor, Nick Leggett, members of the Whitireia Council, Whitireia’s CEO Don Campbell, along with other Whitireia staff, and Foundation Trustees. Chair of the Foundation, Tim Sheppard, presided over the ceremony, where our sponsors personally presented the awards to each student. Speaking for the students, Anaru Rima, a Bachelor of Nursing (Māori) student and  Ngāti Toa scholarship recipient, impressed on guests and sponsors, just what it meant to receive such support:

The generosity of the sponsors and their support allows us to progress and move forward within our different areas of study. We will repay you through being committed, focused and dedicated to our studies at Whitireia – Anaru Rima

Pacifica students

Whitireia’s brand new Wikitoria Katene building (at the Porirua campus) was a fitting location for the ceremony, reflecting the significant milestones achieved by both Whitireia Community Polytechnic and the Foundation, in the past year. Last week saw Whitireia celebrating the opening of its impressive new building, and upgraded facilities for Health Science students. In another milestone, the Foundation’s Trustees had last year set the ambitious target of $100,000 to be awarded in scholarships for 2013, up from 70,000 in 2012. In fact, the Whitireia Foundation was proud to award more than $103,000 in scholarships this year. The scholarships support students’ studies in a range of areas, including: Nursing, Social Work, Teaching, Information Technology, Applied Business Studies, Professional Cookery, Performing Arts, Electrical and Automotive Engineering and Carpentry.

Social work students

The Foundation and students gratefully acknowledge our 15 valued sponsors for providing grants ranging from $500 to $3000. Most are for tuition, with two providing grants for books. Sisters - both recipients of a 2013 Whitireia Foundation Scholarship

The awarding of scholarships was followed by a ‘mix and mingle’ supper, where sponsors and students could get to know each other, along with trustees, Whitireia staff, Council members and invited guests.

Thanks must go to scholarship administrator Donna Creary and other Whitireia staff who worked hard to deliver what appeared to be a seamless presentation ceremony – a stand-out evening for all who attended.

Whitireia Foundation Scholarship Recipients

Congratulations to all our 2013 Whitireia Foundation Scholarship recipients. We look forward to hearing about your year!
